Earth Hour is more than just an hour for the planet – it's a movement for our future

Starting as a symbolic “lights out” event in Sydney in 2007, Earth Hour has grown to become one of the world's largest grassroots movements for the environment. The global event has inspired individuals, communities, businesses and organizations in 190 countries and territories to take action against climate change and nature loss.

Earth Hour started in Cambodia in 2010, becoming a popular annual event mobilizing young people and others to care for the planet. In partnership with government ministries, private sector companies, youth groups and local celebrities, Earth Hour Cambodia has engaged over six million people with online campaigns and in-person events over the last ten years.

Earth Hour goes beyond just turning off the lights for sixty minutes. It’s an opportunity for us to envision a better future for people and nature – something that’s only possible when we take action together.

Earth Hour Cambodia 2025

This year, Earth Hour will coincide with World Water Day, a yearly reminder of the importance of our freshwater habitats and resources. Earth Hour Cambodia 2025 will highlight the interconnectedness of river and climate conservation, calling on communities, businesses and policymakers to protect the Mekong River and the Irrawaddy dolphin.

The Mekong River is a lifeline for millions of people, providing fish for sustenance, waterways for transportation, irrigation for rice cultivation and a natural buffer against flooding. It’s also home to Cambodia’s critically endangered Irrawaddy river dolphins, where they remain in a 120km stretch of water between Stung Treng and Kratie provinces.

If we want to keep dolphins from disappearing tomorrow, we must act today. This year’s Earth Hour Cambodia will follow the Mekong Dolphin Swim, a four-day relay across 120 kilometres of the Mekong River to mobilize action for dolphin conservation. Starting 17 March 2025, our swimming team will brave the water’s wildlife, currents and fishing nets across the river dolphin’s only range in Cambodia, raising awareness and funds to turn the tide for a better future.

Earth Hour 2025 will take place on 22 March 2025 in Kratie province following the completion of the Mekong Dolphin Swim. We urge you to join us there for a 4K fun run, booth exhibition and our lights-off ceremony, where we will switch off our lights and give an hour for Earth. Follow our Facebook page to learn more about how you can join.

Can’t celebrate Earth Hour with us in person? You can still participate in the Biggest Hour for Earth by switching off your lights at 8:30 PM on 22 March 2025. You urge you to spend 60 minutes doing something good for the planet while doing something you love. Visit the Earth Hour website for inspiration on how you can give an hour to Earth.
