WWF-Cambodia has launched a four-year initiative (2022-2026) known as the "IKI SCP Phase II Project on Establishing Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP)," supported by the International Climate Initiative (IKI) and The Federal Ministry for the Environment, Nature Conservation, Nuclear Safety and Consumer Protection (BMUV).

The project aims to reduce emissions and enhance adaptation and resilience to climate change by implementing complementary interventions that link sustainable production to consumption, transforming elements and behaviors in the food system, as well as the agricultural and forestry sectors. Key interventions include:

  1. Increasing Urban Consumers' Awareness: Educating urban consumers about the connection between consumption choices and environmental impacts to encourage behavior change.
  2. Co-developing Sustainable Models: Creating and refining models, strategies, and innovations in collaboration with the private sector to integrate sustainable consumption and production (SCP) measures.
  3. Providing Knowledge to Stakeholders: Offering information to governments, farmers, and value chain actors on sustainable practices (e.g., regenerative agriculture and agroecological practices) to replace harmful production methods and promote their adoption.
  4. Promoting SCP in Policy: Advocating for the inclusion of SCP measures and sustainable food systems approaches in multilateral policy processes.

WHERE WE WORK

Mondulkiri Province is the largest province in Cambodia, known for its abundant natural resources and extensive forest cover. The shift from traditional upland farming to cash crop cultivation has significantly boosted the provincial economy. Key food crops in the province, which are expected to grow and expand in the future, include peanuts, cashew nuts, cassava, coffee, cocoa, and soybeans. However, the use of sustainable practices is rare, potentially threatening crop growth and negatively impacting the local ecology. By 2025, it is envisioned that Sustainable Consumption and Production (SCP) principles, coupled with agroecological applications, will be adopted and implemented across Cambodia's agri-food system. This includes all stakeholders—from consumers and producers to other actors along the value chain and political decision-makers—to advance responsible, low-carbon agri-food supply chains.

Partnerships and Collaborations

Since 2022, the SCP Phase II project has worked with government, businesses, farmers, and civil society to implement sustainable practices across food systems and forestry. The project enhances economic, social, and environmental performance by developing solutions and promoting sustainable practices at both consumer and production levels. It focuses on raising consumer awareness in Cambodia, encouraging business adoption of sustainable methods, building policy capacity, and supporting local communities, with a strong emphasis on gender equality and inclusivity.

Project Outcomes

The SCP Project will advance sustainable land use, biodiversity conservation, and climate change goals, aligning with the country’s priorities for the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Additionally, the project will significantly contribute to achieving the positive outcomes of the following strategies:

  • Cambodia Climate Change Strategic Plan (CCCSP) 2014-2023
  • National Strategic Plan on Green Growth (NSPGG) 2013-2030
  • Cambodia SCP Roadmap
  • National Adaptation Plan (NAP)
  • National Protected Areas Strategic Management Plan (NPASMP) 2017-2031
